Folk and Land: The Revitalization of Our Culture

The soil is the foundation of our European Culture, both in terms of practical sustenance and spiritually. The land has a mystical quality to which the Folk is rooted by ties of Family--of Blood--for generation upon generation. This is the meaning of that misunderstood and slandered concept Blood & Soil.
The Village emerges to fill the social and economic needs of an expanding rural population, to both sell produce and facilitate social communication. This is the beginnings of a culture. As the Culture gives way to Civilization, the symbols are no longer the land and its Family/Blood rootedness, nor the Village; but the Town becoming City, and ultimately (at the last, 'Winter' phase of a Civilization) the Megalopolis, drawing the rural population into its embrace, submerging the citydweller into a nebulous, alienated mass of proletarians and merchants without ties of land or blood and with at most a precarious notion of family. Above it all stand the new lords and masters: the Bankers, with their democratic political demagogues.
The philosopher-historian Oswald Spengler writes of this disintegration in The Decline of The West:
"The megalopolis - skeptical, practical, artificial - alone represents Civilization today. The soil-peasantry before its gates does not count. The 'People' means the city-people, an inorganic mass, something fluctuating."
THE ROOTEDNESS OF THE PEASANTRY
The peasant/farmer is rooted to the soil in a numinous, mystical manner. His land provides him with more than food or an income; it is here that the generations of his family live and die, where their sweat, blood and tears and laughter consecrate the earth in the most personal way. Where is there such connectedness to one's environment in the City, where all is in a state of flux and transience: where impersonality is supreme. Spengler continues:
"He who digs and ploughs is seeking not to plunder, but to alter Nature. To plant implies not to take something, but to produce something. BUT WITH THIS, MAN HIMSELF BECOMES PLANT--namely, as peasant. He roots in the earth that he tends, the soul of man discovers a soul in the countryside, and a new earthboundness of being, a new feeling pronounces itself. Hostile Nature becomes the friend, earth becomes MOTHER Earth. Between sowing and begetting, harvest and death, and child and the grain, a profound affinity is set up..." The symbol of this youthful Culture, this 'Springtime' is the farmhouse, "The great symbol of settledness... It is PROPERTY in the most sacred sense of the word."
It is the Civilization in its Late or "Winter" phase with the City and the citydweller :dominant that has man returning to a spiritually nomadic, rootless condition. He is no longer settled; there are no real, deep - inner - ties to property in the profound sense, not even among those who own their city dwellings. The City epitomized by the Megalopolis in Late Civilization (for ancient Rome and modern New York, London or Paris) draws the races of the world to it; no longer only the rural population of its own Folk. The Megalopolis is bloodless, money-based, desiring capital and labor regardless of the racial and cultural sources. The great melting-pot is upheld as the ideal. America symbolizes perfectly the Western Civilization's Late phase, and whoever seeks to predict the future of his own society needs only to look first at what unfolds in America.
URBAN DRIFT/URBAN SPRAWL
One of the most transparent signs of the crisis of the Western Civilization is both the depopulation of the countryside and urban sprawl.
In New Zealand a majority was still rural until 1906 at about 52%. By 1945 about a quarter of the population was still rural. However by 1980 the proportion had shrunk to 15% where it stands today. By 1990 68% lived in "main urban areas" defined as cities of at least 30,000 (NZ Official Yearbook 1995).
Simultaneously, urban centres are increasingly encroaching on surrounding countryside. Houses spring up on former farmland, even bordering wildlife reserves.
This is the inexorable process of a Civilization in decay. It follows the same phases as other Civilizations such as Rome, as Spengler showed. However, Western Man has the advantage of historical perspective, of an historical sense more finely tuned than any other Civilization. He can look back ore the past, on the Cycles of Civilization, and see the whence of his doing. He has an historical conscious that separates him from those of other Civilizations in a manner similar to the way humans are separated from other animals by their self-conscious. THE QUESTION REMAINS WHETHER THERE ARE SUFFICIENT NUMBERS WITH THE WILL AND THE SPIRITUAL ESSENCE LEFT NOT ONLY TO LEARN FROM THE PAST BUT TO PUT THOSE LESSONS INTO EFFECT BY FIGHTING FOR A REBIRTH OF THE WESTERN SOUL.
The tragedy is that those who did try to fight for a spiritual rebirth were defeated in 1945 and many of them were killed. It could well be this was the last chance we had; a tragedy from which we might not recover.
Nevertheless any revival of the European spirit MUST proceed from the concept of Blood & Soil. It must also take account of how the traditional and spiritual attributes of the European can be synthesized with our science and technology which are themselves products of the European soul: of that yearning for knowledge and exploration Spengler referred to as "Faustian."
Indeed since science itself is but an unfolding of the laws of Nature, it seems logical that science and technology should work FOR the spirit of Blood & Soil, and not as they are now doing AGAINST. The problem is not with technology itself, or the unique Faustian soul that gives it shape; it is with the manner by which it is utilized to ravage Nature and dehumanize Man for the benefit of industrial capitalism and the small coteries of plutocrats who control it. The elimination of plutocracy is therefore a prerequisite for the rebirth of our Folk and Culture.
NS GERMANY : AN EXPERIMENT IN WESTERN REBIRTH
NS-Germany was the only major modern effort to address the decline of the Western Civilization, and to attempt an answer to the question of how to maintain a progressive, technological State yet return the Folk to the "Springtime" of its youth. Whatever mistakes, atrocities or excesses be attached to the NS experiment, the crisis of our time requires that we look at that experiment dispassionately to see what lessons might be learned from both its mistakes and successes. For the NS Reich was a conscious effort to return our Folk to the peasant values which alone can give health to our culture.
Dr. Anna Bramwell of Oxford has undertaken such an objective examination in her study of the Reich Peasant Leader and Minister of Agriculture, Walther Darre. (Blood & Soil: Walther Darre & Hitler's Green Party, Kensal Press, Britain, 1985). Dr. Bramwell shows that Darre was a major pioneer of today's ecological movement, and that many of his ideas filtered through to that movement. From 1934 he launched an organic farming programme. After the war he continued to write about problems of soil erosion, the dangers of artificial fertilizers, and the need to maintain biomass, until his death in 1953.
The real Germany was for Darre and his supporters within the National Socialist party not the Germany of merchants, feudal lords, cardinals, of Teutonic Knights bringing the mercantile spirit back from their Crusades in the Levant. It was the Germany of the peasant, and of the Peasant Revolt of 1525 which had sought to replace Roman, feudal law with a return to the old, customary German law under which they had been free.
Darre adopted certain of the views of Rudolf Steiner despite the latter's opposition to NS. He opposed the industrialization of the farmer, artificial fertilizer, mass-produced grain, and insecticides. Goslar, a medieval town, became a new peasant capital, which Darre envisaged as the center for the formation of a Northern European peasant community. Festivals and farmers' rallies were held here. Conferences on Blood & Soil were attended by representatives of Norwegian and Danish peasant movements.
Practical measures included large-scale land reclamation and harvest work undertaken by the youth of the Labor Service,where all classes of the young worked together. By the end of 1934 over half a million children from the cities and industrial areas had been sent on holidays to the country through State health programs.
"They saw, often for the first time, cattle grazing in the meadows, they felt the charm of the countryside, of the mountains, lakes and the sea. They had the unique experience of coming into contact with the customs of the peasantry, rural customs and festivities and with the peaceful charm of Nature, in contrast to the hustle and bustle of city life. Above all, it was the work of the farmer that turned out most impressive to the mind of the city child. The spirit of the city child struck roots, as it were, once again in the soil of its forefathers..." (Werner Reher, Social Welfare in Germany, Berlin, 1938).
The manner by which a progressive State could adjust itself to ecological need was expressed for e.g. in the huge autobahns that were constructed to be "embedded in the landscape organically," under the direction of landscape architect and passionate ecologist Alwin Seifert. Only local materials were used in the construction.
Under NS the principal demands of the 1525 Peasant Revolt were at last fulfilled, returning old German law which assured the security of the peasant on his land against death, duty and foreclosure.
The Reich Agricultural Estate was founded as a self-governing corporation, after the manner of the corporations the peasants had prior to feudalism. The Estate was enacted in 1933 to combine all Germans associated with agriculture, from farmer to wholesaler and retailer of produce. As in the old guilds, the Estate ensured both the quality of the products and the social, economic and cultural welfare of its members. The Estate was divided into regional, district and local associations to account for local conditions and custom. It ensured both the production and marketing of produce in a national economic plan.
The basis of the peasant revival was the Hereditary Farms Act. "The law takes the farm as a living cell in the folk organism." The law ensured that indebtedness was reduced, and that farmland could not be confiscated. The law "takes fields, farm homesteads and cattle as a natural unit in the center of which stands the farmer himself. The union is regarded as a permanent one. Therefore the farm shall remain to the descendants or relatives as an inheritance in the hands of free German peasants." Hereditary farms were defined as those no larger than 300 acres and capable of supporting a family of several children, so that "as large a number as possible of medium and small farms shall be spread over the whole country."
An Act of June 1, 1933, in seeking to reduce farm debt and protect the farmer, ensured repayment would be from the yield without endangering the farmer's livelihood. Property could not be confiscated by creditors, nor auctioned. (Erich Schinnerer, German Law & Legislation, Berlin 1938).
The revitalization of the European spirit and of Pan-Europa necessarily means a return to rustic, Heathen values and institutions, those that are organic above and beyond the artificiality and rootlessness of Late Civilization and its City basis.
The NS experiment provides ample lessons, as do the insights of both Rudolf Steiner and the ecological movement. However, as we've shown, the prerequisite for our revival is the demolition of plutocracy and the debt-banking system upon which it rests. Again, this requires a return to custom, to tradition which in the field of economics means BARTER. In a modern context this barter would take the form of credit and money issued as a non-usurious means of exchanging goods and services; not as at present as an interest-bearing debt for the profit of a few plutocrats. It means the socialization of banking. Details of such monetary reform are outside the scope of this study; suffice it to say that with usury-free people's credit agriculture, and indeed all honest, productive work, would benefit; debt and tax would be enormously reduced. It is here pertinent to comment that NZ was established on debt by plutocrats and speculators, who charged an exorbitant 10% to 15% interest on loans for small holdings during the 1850's. Today interest on rural debt accounts for the LARGEST single item of farm expenditure.
An e.g. of how modern technology and a rustic revival can not only co-exist but act as mutual stimuli is the potential for ethanol as a fuel that is non-toxic to the point of being drinkable and has no pollutants. Ethanol is produced from a large variety of vegetation. The cultivation of such crops for ethanol production would alone provide a huge incentive for rural expansion.
Like the Reich Agricultural Estate and the Labor Front of NS Germany, new forms of representation are needed to replace the old liberal parliaments that merely act as a facade for plutocracy. Occupational and professional franchise can replace the election of party candidates as a more direct and competent form of representation. Such elections could easily be undertaken via the unions and professional organizations, which themselves could be reformed as Guilds and Corporations in the Medieval manner, not only representing their members at national and local assemblies, but also being responsible for their social, economic and cultural welfare and education. Once again, a detailed examination of the mechanism of the Corporate State is beyond the scope of this paper.
Cheap, efficient public transport could be developed as the alternative to cars, and certainly there should be frequent "car-free" days, and perhaps a limitation on the number of cars per family. No doubt at first the necessity to walk to one's local shop up the street instead of driving would be a great inconvenience and burden to some!
Parks, reserves and gardens need to be developed on a large scale and within urban areas. There must be limits on the rush to build houses on every piece of available land; and certainly - if only for aesthetic reasons - a house should not be constructed within sight of a wildlife reserve! There should be an end to multilayered apartment buildings, whether public or private, and all dwellings should have at least minimal land for cultivation.
All primary and secondary schools should have a significant portion of property devoted to cultivating vegetables, such work being part of every student's curriculum, and the products themselves being consumed for school lunches.
The rustic spirit that lurks repressed within the European Folk can again be raised to consciousness by the celebration of the Seasons, National and local festivals, agricultural fairs, and mobile rural exhibitions as features of the life of every city and town.
Excursions between rural and urban areas should be regular features in the education of youth, including extended visits on farms... A Youth Service should be established where the sons of all classes work side-by-side, and this should certainly include the establishment of Youth Camps in rural areas, and regular farmwork.
Our artists and musicians might lend their creativity to this spiritual rebirth by celebrating the numinosity of Blood & Soil, Folk & Land in their art, and should be patronized by the State and guilds to do so.

National Socialist Germany - a nation of animal lovers.
National Socialist Germany - a nation of animal lovers! Under Darre and Goering, laws were passed in Germany banning all forms of cruelty to animals (Reichstierschutzgesetz). This has been well documented - however many people will be unaware of the extraordinary lengths National Socialist Germany took to protect rare and endangered species.
National Socialist Germany was the first modern nation in history to pass laws protecting the Wolf. These laws were passed in 1934. The Wolf has always been a heathen symbol, a totem animal of the Nordic and Saxon peoples. Unfortunately it was too late to save this animal from the slaughter of the shepherds and herders, who even today still hunt the wolf in remote parts of Scandinavia. The Lutheran church is the dominant faith in Scandinavia- a hardline reformist church. The slaughter of the wolves by christians is nothing more than an attempt to rid themselves of any reminders of their heathen past. The good news is that there are wolves living in the wild in Germany once more. I once lived in an area of rural eastern Europe, where wild boar and the European bison still roam free. I hope that one day they will roam wild across the woods and walds of England too, along with the bear, the lynx and the noble wolf as well.

Today we remember Hermann Löns, who died on the 26th September 1914, Löns was killed in action during an assault on a French position at Loivre near Reims in France.
Author of the 'wehrbauern' classic novel The Warwolf (Der Wehrwolf) about a Saxony peasant called Harm Wulf who is forced to fight a guerilla war against foreign mercenaries during the Thirty Years war.

Animal Welfare in the Third Reich by Kerry Bolton
This is a small book, but packed with information regarding the treatment of animals within National Socialist Germany. As with ecologically, animal welfare was at the heart of many of the new National Socialist laws, and Germany received praised from many nations for their efforts in banning cruelty to animals.
Kerry Bolton's book draws from a range of resources and documents the various steps Germany took to banish cruelty to animals from the German Reich, such as the banning of vivisections and kosher meat.
An absolute and permanent ban on vivisection is not only a necessary law to protect animals and to show sympathy with their pain, but it is also a law for humanity itself.... I have therefore announced the immediate prohibition of vivisection and have made the practice a punishable offense in Prussia. Until such time as punishment is pronounced the culprit shall be lodged in a concentration camp.

I know some of my readers are 'preppers', others will be interested in self sufficiency. The Wehrbauer is a soldier farmer - and we shouldn't forget or neglect the farming side - at least for those who have become interested in Woden's Folks 'Ethel' project, where families grow food for themselves on a small scale, but share tips and knowledge.
One aspect which should be of concern are new EU laws which'll mean that soon, all of our seeds we buy from garden centres will be hybrid or GM.
In the USA laws such as the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010 (FSMA) means a US citizen can be prosecuted for growing and distributing home grown produce.
The EU has plans to follow suit, as does New Zealand, with similar laws. Whilst these laws are presented in a manner which describes them as there to protect our safety, all it means is the NWO will now control what we eat.
What is wrong with seeds from a garden centre? Well if you are growing your own fruit and veg, nothing. However, these seeds are hybrids (known as F1's). This means that a company can copyright the name of the plant you're growing - however the seeds that are produced at the end of the plants cycle will never germinate if you we're to plant them on in the next growing season.
One way around all this, and as a way of securing a supply of seeds which you'll be able to replant every year it to buy Heritage (also called Heirloom) seeds. These seeds are purebreed seeds - producing the kind of fruits and veg that our ancestors will have grown.
And as they are much closer to the original species from which they descend, you can harvest your own seeds to save and regrow in the future.
There are many videos on youtube regarding 'seed saving' - and there are many sellers in the UK and US who still sell heritage and heirloom seeds.

Today we remember Walther Darré, who died 5th Sept 1953. Darré was one of Germany's leading Blood and Soil ideologists and is considered by many to be the 'Father of the Greens'. During his youth he had joined the Artamanen League, a nationalist agrarian movement, where he met Himmler - who had also joined the movement. Later in life he joined the NSDAP where he held the title Reichsbauernführer (Reich Peasant Leader). Darré also served as Reichsminister of Food and Agriculture. His two most important books championed the rural and peasant classes - Das Bauerntum als Lebensquell der Nordischen Rasse, Munich, 1927 and Neuadel aus Blut und Boden, Munich, 1930 (The Peasantry as Life force of the Nordic Race and New Nobility of Blood and Soil). Darré was also founded the Ahnenerbe, along with Himmler and Hermann Wirth. Both Darré and his wife were devout pagans, who would distribute 'Germanic heathen calendars' to the farming community.

The peasant of our racial stock has always carefully endeavoured to increase the natural powers of the soil, plants, and animals, and to preserve the balance of the whole of nature. For him, respect for divine creation is the measure of all culture. If, therefore, the new Lebensräume are to become a homeland for our settlers, the planned arrangement of the landscape to keep it close to nature is a decisive prerequisite. It is one of the bases for fortifying the German Volk.

Reproduction of some old 'English Heathen Front' articles - which all 'National-Ecologists' will find interesting!
We stand proudly in the English national ecology tradition of Rolf Gardiner, Viscount Lymington and Jorian Jenks. We are inheritors of the great German ecologists: Riehl, Haeckel, Darré, Gruhl. Yet, we also recognise there are other traditions from which we may borrow to further our cause. These traditions may have been appropriated by the social ecologists of the Left but in the name of the English people, we are prepared to repatriate these for our own vital ends.
Bioregionalism is one such tradition. A product of the North American counterculture of the 1960s, the term bioregionalism was coined by Canadian Allen Van Newkirk in an article first published in the journal of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources in 1974. The concept was further popularised by Peter Berg and Raymond Dassmann of the Planet Drum Foundation, an organisation established in the mid-seventies to “pursue research and publish information on the relationship between human culture and the natural processes of the planetary biosphere”.
The Planet Drum Foundation may have been a hippie groupuscule but its work inspired Ernest Callenbach to write the first bioregional novel Ecotopia in 1975. Callenbach told the revolutionary tale of the secession of northern California, Oregon and Washington from the United States to form an independent north-west Pacific bioregion.
The best known American bioregionalist Kirkpatrick Sale – author of the Dwellers in the Land – defines a bioregion as: “a place defined by its life forms, its topography and its biota, rather than by human dictates; a region governed by nature, not legislature”. This mirrors the EHF's own monist perspective which argues that the Darwinian laws of nature are of necessity the laws of society.
Like the EHF, the bioregionalists see modern states and administrative divisions as artificial constructs. Modern industrial society alienates people from the land. Instead, living-in-place is advocated, a philosophy that means “following the necessities and pleasures of life as they are uniquely presented by a particular site, and evolving ways to ensure long-term occupancy of that site”. This demands a return to “an age-old way of existence disrupted … a few millennia ago by the rise of exploitative civilisation, and more generally during the past two centuries by the spread of industrial civilisation”.
The EHF too sees the rise of Judaeo-Christianity as exploitative and destructive of primordial harmony. Like Berg and Dassmann, we want to see the restoration of ecological citizenship for our people. We call this process reinhabitation: “the learning to live-in-place in an area that has been disrupted and injured through past exploitation. It involves becoming native to a place through becoming aware of the particular ecological relationships that operate within and around it. It means understanding activities and evolving social behaviour that will enrich the life of that place, restore its life-supporting systems, and establish an ecologically and socially sustainable pattern of existence within it. Simply stated it involves becoming fully alive in and with a place. It involves applying for membership in a biotic community and ceasing to be its exploiter”.
This is the land ethic of the EHF, one key aspect of our Odalist worldview. Accordingly, we see bioregionalism as a useful cultural tool, a weapon to be wielded against the forces of global monoculture.
The battle for an English bioregion is an integral part of our struggle. We demand reinhabitation – the right of the English folk to rediscover the joys of living-in-place. Our English bioregion will be a land freed from the shackles of Judaeo-Christianity, a bulwark against global capital. It will be a living testament to the unity of English blood and English soil.

The English Heathen Front sees the history of the English folk as “the unbroken life of our nation”. For our reading of the past, we draw on the work of the great Teutonist historians – John Kemble, EA Freeman, JR Green and William Stubbs – writing in England between the late 1840s and the 1870s.
Beginning with Kemble's “The Saxons in England” in 1849, these so-called British Germanists traced the origins of a free and noble English citizenry back to the tribal law and practices of our ancient Anglo-Saxon forebears. Freedom was product of the German forests, not of the Roman senate. They saw in our primordial English roots the sources of strength that made Britain the world's greatest imperial power.
At the same time, these historians denounced the “Norman yoke” imposed by 1066 not on grounds of blood but because it was a “usurpation of the soil”. It introduced the alien (ie Frankish) system of feudalism and was a “crusade of confiscation, plunder, rapine and devastation”.
Yet, according to EA Freeman, the impact of the Norman invasion was “neither to destroy nor to found but to continue”. In other words, the English blood community remained, enriched by the injection of Germanic Norman blood even if political oppression followed on the continental model.
Here surely lies a lesson for all of us today. Despite the impositions of multiculturalism, the historical burden of Judaeo-Christianity, the predations of global capital, our English blood remains, continues and will ultimately triumph.
The EHF believes we can gain great strength from learning about our tribal ancestors and their tribulations. For, with John Kemble, we assert that “the Englishman has inherited the noblest portion of his being from the Anglo-Saxon”. Let all those working for the revival of militant folk consciousness in England, turn to the work of these great historians for inspiration and ammunition in the struggle ahead.

The English Heathen Front salutes Rolf Gardiner (1902 – 1971) as father of the English Greens and hero of our National Ecology movement. Farmer and forester, Gardiner was an early champion of biodynamic (organic) farming and a founder member of the Soil Association.
His youthful links with Guild Socialism and the Social Credit movement gave way in the 1930s to a more mature engagement with National Socialism. Gardiner was the creator of the Springhead Ring, an attempt at agrarian renaissance based at his estate in Dorset which involved establishing a Rural University and the revival of folk dance and song and rural festivals.
The semi-militaristic life of service advocated by Gardiner led him in 1936 to membership of Lord Lymington's back-to-the-land group English Array and to Kinship in Husbandry. Both these organisations attributed social breakdown in England to the influence of “aliens … who bring corruption and disrespect for the ancient decencies”.
Gardiner was a powerful advocate of folk traditions. He believed “folk art is the matrix of all arts” and inveighed against cosmopolitanism, intellectuals and the modern cult of individualism. He actively supported agrarian work camps for the unemployed -- most notably that run by the national ecologist Order of Woodcraft Chivalry at Godshill in Hampshire in 1932.
Gardiner liked to describe himself as “a plain, practical working farmer, forester … an ameliorator of the land”. Nonetheless, his thinking was heavily influenced by the work of blut und boden ideologue Walther Darré whom Gardiner visited in Germany before the outbreak of World War Two. Gardiner also corresponded with Darré after 1945 hailing him as the inspiration for Britain's organic farming movement. Another key influence on Gardiner was Jorian Jenks, agricultural adviser to the British Union of Fascists.
In one of his last public addresses in Strasbourg in October 1971, Rolf Gardiner stated what the EHF now sees as one of its central propositions:
“In the post-modern age, society will have to discipline itself to more selective consumption, to reliance on bare essentials, to thrift. Squandering our resources and reckless consumption lead to ultimate impoverishment and all-pervading illness of soils, plants, beasts and humankind. We cannot afford them. We must adopt a wiser style of living altogether if we are to survive at all”.
The EHF too calls for a “wiser style of living” based on the values of National Ecology. This approach -- allied with a revival of militant folk consciousness in England -- offers us our last and greatest hope of national salvation. We salute Rolf Gardiner, father of the English Greens!

The English Heathen Front honours Rolf Gardiner, father of the English Greens, for his struggle against “the decadence of the over-civilisation … that afflicts our nation”. Gardiner characterised over-civilisation in two ways: as a capitalist\commercial conspiracy against the English folk (“pluto-democracy”) and as a severance of English blood from its indigenous soil (“discarnate culture”).
Thoughout his life, he fought tirelessly for a fledgling National Ecology based on the restoration of the ancient bond between blood and soil:
“I do not believe that the dream of a rural civilisation is a vain one. The earth is a heavenly being and we are its appointed husbandsmen. That conception must triumph over the idea of the machine, the world-factory. But where there is no vision the people will perish”.
Gardiner's vision was “to renew the roots of our culture” through the revival of “the religion of the soul through the soil”. This was the basis on which “the tribes of Yggdrasil should once more reign around the Baltic and the northern seas”. He deplored alien influence, especially “the barbarism which invades us … from America” which he described as “a hostile force beleaguering us on all sides”. Ultimately, to achieve his aims, he called for an “apolitical revolution” founded on a “statesmanship … akin to husbandry … as elemental as fire, earth, water”.
In Gardiner's vision, politics were to be subordinated to ecology. Why? Because to divorce oneself from the land is “to live in the upper storey of a house whose foundations have crumbled”. This meant that Gardiner regarded the soil as holy and considered agriculture a “sacramental” act. This mirrors the thinking of today's Odalists in the EHF and marks Gardiner out as one of our most important intellectual forebears.
Like Gardiner, we oppose the “deadening effects of industrialisation” and mourn man's resultant loss of “sensibility and reverence” for nature. We also share his mission to restore the vital balance between man and soil. Indeed, it was Gardiner himself who prophesied the birth of Odalism in England when he wrote, some sixty years ago:
“It is not just a question of assembling a new group (nor at all of forming a new political party) but rather of drawing together an already existing, though largely unawares, community of conscience, sympathy and purpose … We must strive to achieve a polyphony of effort; to practise a sort of social and spiritual counterpoint. All that one person can do is to call; but only several together can make the music that has to follow. It is the future of England that is our theme. And beyond it the theme of rural and regional reconstruction in Europe. But Europe will only listen to England if England offers a wisdom worthy of being hearkened to, and if there are men equipped with the experience, and with the power of language, for presenting that wisdom in terms of living speech and action”.
By “drawing together an already existing, though largely unawares, community of conscience, sympathy and purpose”, the mission of the English Heathen Front is to spearhead the revival of a militant folk consciousness in England.
In our work, we proudly acknowledge our debt to Rolf Gardiner, the father of the English Greens. We salute him as a hero -- his radical thinking a rallying point for our comrades throughout the Allgermanische Heidnische Front, for Odalists and National Ecologists everywhere.
